Construction

I designed two different double page spreads for me to get feedback on and to give me more options to choose between. I decided to use the design of the first DPS but to change the black background to a colour which tied in with the rest of the magazine.

Construction

I scanned the booklet from the front of Demi Lovato's Confident album so I could use it on the contents page of my magazine.
Then I cropped it so only the album artwork was visible and so that it would fit on the contents page properly.

Hot Desking

I did a hot desking exercise to get feedback for the construction of my front cover, contents pageant double page spread. I first wrote questions on a word document that I wanted to know the answers to in order to help me improve my magazine. Then I opened my work up alongside the word document and allowed people around the room to look at it and answer the questions. This helped me figure out ways to improve my work.

This is the work I showed them:

And this is the feedback I got:

Strengths:

  • The DPS with the black background is easily readable and the images stand out well.
  • the colours on the second DPS represent the genre well
  • The quality of the photo for my front cover is good quality and works well on the page.

Areas for Improvement:

  • model needs to be touched up on front cover
  • model needs to be isolated on front cover
  • make the front cover fit in more with the DPS and contents page
  • change the size of the masthead and positioning and size of coverlines.

How I'm going to improve:

  • I will make the model stand out from the background on the front cover by blurring the background
  • I will use the spot healing tool to touch up the model on my front cover
  • I'll make the pages tie in together more by using similar fonts and similar colour schemes
  • I will change the font of the masthead on the front cover and make it bigger so it stands out and would be easy to read from a distance
  • I will reposition the coverlines to break conventions and create a USP and also to make it look less cluttered.
